This particular Psilocybe cubensis strain originates from the tropical landscapes of Costa Rica, specifically discovered at around 1200 feet elevation in the foothills of the Arenal Volcano. The spores hail from a rugged and exotic environment, providing plenty to explore under the microscope. It was at the volcano’s base where clusters of these mushrooms naturally thrived.

According to local legend, a person known as Rhino first discovered and introduced this variety. There’s also talk that indigenous tribes in the area have been using these mushrooms for thousands of years, adding to the sense of mystery and intrigue that surrounds them. The mushrooms themselves have medium-sized, white stems that lead up to small, rounded caps. These hemispherical caps have a unique feature: after the veil tears away from the stem, it sticks to the cap rather than the stem—a rare trait among other Psilocybe cubensis varieties. The caps are a golden brown with streaks of darker brown, and as they age, they develop a deep blue bruising when touched. The Costa Rican strain is ideal for beginners due to the ease of spore study, while more advanced microscopists will appreciate the diversity it brings to their collection.

Storage of Liquid Culture

To maintain quality, store your liquid culture syringe or jar in a sealed bag in the refrigerator at 2-8°C (35-46°F). Do not freeze, as this will kill the living organisms. While cultures can last up to 12 months, use them within six months for optimal results. Allow the culture to warm to room temperature before use.

Prevent Contamination

Keep your liquid culture in a sealed, sterile environment to prevent contamination. Handle it with clean hands or gloves, and use the entire syringe in one session with a sterile needle. If you need to reuse a needle, flame sterilise the tip. Dispose of needles responsibly.

Usage and Shelf Life

Allow your liquid culture to reach room temperature before use to encourage mycelium growth. While cultures can last for many months, we recommend using them within six months for the best outcomes. Mushroom spore syringes can also last about a year or more when properly refrigerated.

What If I See Contamination?

Healthy liquid cultures appear as white or off-white to golden translucent globules. If you see any discoloration, cloudiness, or unusual growth, the culture may be contaminated and should not be used.
